NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts , and More

The Tiny Desk Concerts started as a joke. NPR’s online music producer Stephen Thompson jokingly suggested that artist Laura Gibson perform on Bob Boilen’s desk during All Songs Considered, a show hosted by Boilen. Thompson and Boilen had seen Gibson perform at 2008’s SXSW but had not heard much of her performance due to the noisy crowd. This performance was the beginning of what would become a series of intimate performance that have featured over 200 international artists across all genres, including South African Grammy winning artists Soweto Gospel Choir, Zimbabwean legend Oliver Mtukudzi, and some of our favourites: Valerie June, Macklemore & Ryan, The Cranberries, and many more. Celebrating their 200th session in March 2012, Gibson performed four tracks from her then new album.

Tiny Desk Concerts are curated by Boilen and you can access them on their YouTube channel, or from the website. They have hosted more than 250 different artists from all over the world.

Especially interesting is the new posting they have put up on First Listen, one of their regular music properties, of jazz god Thelonious Monk’s performance in Paris in 1969. We. Are. Blown. Away. Click on the image below to have a listen.
